Can i paint matt over silk

My advice would be to sadly remove all the silk paint THEN paint the walls with matte. Another alternative would be to paint over the silk paint with some PVA, then proceed with the matte.

Hope the other room is staying well the one you mentioned before. DIYHomefit , 19 Sep You won't get a roller to roll on that stuff. Thanks x 1. Sorry guys, ignore my part about the PVA. After looking at my answer, I can see where I went wrong! Took advice from an apparent 'expert' about this, and yep you guessed, made a complete fool out of me.

Is there a purpose made product for this which won't gas out the house too much? Is Bullseye suitable? Re: Painting matt over silk emulsion paint?

Post by nickyhawkins » Sat Nov 19, pm Bullseye will do it but so will cheap acrylic undercoat. Water some of that down, paint the walls and you'll be sorted. Oil based undercoat will do the same, but will stink, take longer, and increase the drying times of the Matt Emulsion Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk. Rating: Post by fitzy » Sat Nov 19, pm I've painted matt over silk many times in the past without any snags.

I wasn't even aware that there could be problems until I joined this forum. These users thanked the author fitzy for the post: ian gibson.

Still give it a light sand like you would with any walls, no point painting over little nibs and bumps. As for Fitzy, I'll own up and say I do the same, but it is always a possibility to go wrong. If the walls look like gloss I'll be cautious, otherwise I get the festool out then paint as normal Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk. One of the more frequently asked questions we get is whether you can paint matt over silk or not. Silk paint has a soft sheen to it and is less efficient than matt at covering any discrepancies and once people realise this, they often want to paint over it with matt. Our focus in this article is to give you some insight as to whether you can paint matt over silk, how to do it and also offer some differing opinions from professionals within the trade.

Whilst methods differ from tradesman to tradesman, all will agree that it is perfectly fine to paint over silk with matt. There is no definitive method to painting over silk with matt and each professional decorator you ask will likely have his or her own preferred way of doing it. Many professional decorators we know will just go straight over a silk wall with two coats of matt.
