Sometimes he asks his father unusual questions about the ocean, nature, the volcano, their home, farmhouse, fishermen and the castle located near the village of the fishermen and his father always satisfies his curiosity about nature, its working, the sea, the waves, the volcano, and its intermittent eruption. Soon it so happens that a huge wave arises in the ocean and wipes out the village in no time before the very eyes of Kino and Jiya.
Both watch this scene from above but have heard the ringing of the bells from the castle of the Old Gentleman, who takes care of the people. When Kino asks the reason for the ringing of the bells, his father responds that it is the sign of the arrival of a storm and the warning of the Old Gentleman to the locals to enter his castle to save their lives. However, not all the fishermen heed his warning and some of them perish with their houses when the waves recede. Jiya faints when he learns about this.
It, then, happens that Jiya starts living with the family of Kino but he keeps sleeping most of the time. When Kino asks his father the reason for his long sleep, he tells him that it is better for him to sleep and then weep when he gets up to release his pent-up emotions. Jiya is resilient, and he made his choices about his future. Many years after losing his parents Jiya decided to go back to the sea and shore.
He was dedicated and hard working, so he was able to buy a boat and make a new house with the view of the ocean because he was ready for the big wave to come again. It took many years for this boy to overcome his fear and pain over his lost childhood. A lot of love, attention and understanding helped him survive and grow up to be a good and hardworking man without losing his faith in life. One unselfish love can help us in the hardest moments and gives us the boost we need to let the best of us come to the surface and make us a person worthy of respect.
If we add good memories of people we love to that love, we can paint the picture of a happy life. He picked up the pieces of his broken childhood and made his dream a reality. We can wander the world, but our heart stays in our hometown because home is the most beautiful place in the world. Japan is a country of many beautiful mountains and shores. It is surrounded by the mysterious, beautiful and blue ocean.
On the mountain ridge lived the farmers. Kino was a boy living in one of the farms. Every time he had to walk from the lowest field he would come back home tired but grateful because the view was spectacular.
The sea had all shades of blue. Jiya lived in the village and he and Kino were best friends. Also the sea would cause great damages with its big waves. The boys would often, after a day of hard work, swim to a small island they called their own.
It was actually owned by an old man who they saw only from a distance. He was old and had many wrinkles. They admired his gardens and sand beach. While they would be on the island they would feed the animals. Both of them loved the ocean. Every now and then they would dive in and when they would reach the cold sea level they would realize all over again that the sea is a mysterious place they should respect.
They collected shells for their mothers to decorate their flowers with. They also loved walking through the forest and explore caves. One day they forgot about the time. It was the first time Jiya saw his father disapproving of his actions. They both went home. He reminded him about the nearby volcano.
Jiya was also helping his father fishing. Such experiences made children grow and gain more respect for our planet and nature. After a hard day, a volcano started raging. Everyone was on guard that night. The next morning ashes fell all over the houses. Everyone was scared of an earthquake. Who are the characters of the big wave? Setting of the big wave story? Families, when they work, are the finest healing institutions of all. In this short story of Ms. Buck's, a boy witnessing his family's demise, is folded in lovingly by a friend's family standing by and scooping him up. The father is so gentle and is the essence of all you want a father to be, as are all the members of this group. From there the story continues, gently through the problems that arise.

Kino's father is very wise. He is able to explain death to Kino in a way that is both simple and deep. He later goes on to guide Kino's attempts to help his grieving friend, Jiya. The advice this father gives is so profound that finding it in a children's book was startling. I will carry his advice for years to come, it is that good. Oct 11, Suraj B rated it it was amazing. The story took place in an Island. Where big waves came and killed most of the people living in beach.
Jiya and kino grew up to be a strong tall and handsome men's. After few years Jiya built a house where his parents and his brother lived, so he marr The name of the book is The Big Wave,by Pearl S. After few years Jiya built a house where his parents and his brother lived, so he married Setsu and lived there.
I really really liked the book because this story connects to the things that's happening around the world today flooding, waves and storms. In the beginning the book made feel sad because the big wave came and killed Jiya's family and other people. But after Jiya grew up and build his own house it made me feel happy because he built the house where his family had built it before and he lived there with his wife Setsu.
In my opinion I wouldn't change anything from the book because the way the author has written the book is great you can understand the events that are happening. I would tell my friends and other people to read this book because it is an interesting story and they would know how the book connects to the things that are happening around the world today and I think they would like the book to. May 01, Jenny rated it really liked it. A tender story for children about being brave in the face of death and choosing life over fear.
Nov 04, Amy T. I read this with my son as part of The Good and the Beautiful language arts curriculum. It seems like it is inspired by the famous woodblock print The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Hokusai, based on the cover art and main event of the book.
However, knowing when it was published, I believe the big wave in the book is symbolic of the atomic bomb at Hiroshima. All of Father's moralizi I read this with my son as part of The Good and the Beautiful language arts curriculum. All of Father's moralizing monologues in the book about how Japanese are strong and brave and how life is stronger than death could easily apply to that disaster as well.
Even though this book seemed a bit simple and trite, I am intrigued to learn more about Pearl S. Apparently she in an American who grew up in China, and her writings about rural life in China have won many awards.
Apr 09, Grace, Queen of Crows and Tomes rated it really liked it Shelves: classics , 4-stars , childrens. This is a nice short book that shows the results of tragedy and how someone overcomes tragedy, told simple enough for a child to understand.
This is told in Kino's point of view, but it is really Jiya's story. It tells about the tragedy that befell him and how he eventually overcome it to continue living his life and to not be afraid. Good book to read if you want something short with a lesson. Sorry I can't rate it higher. It probably deserves better, but I found it too short to be fully developed or to engage me. And even in this 25th anniversary edition the illustrations, famous art by Japanese persons, weren't reproduced cleanly.
But the intent was important. Buck published this in , and the introduction makes it clear that it's a sort of an attempt at reconciliation and friendship between her American readership and the Japanese people, and an homage to their spirit and their c Sorry I can't rate it higher.

AT 57 pages one might not think there could be too much to it, only it's written by Pearl Buck, so of course she can pack everything she wanted to about the subject into such a tiny book. I know next to nothing about the Japanese culture, but I felt captivated by the people in this book and their outlook on life. I think this will be a great book to read aloud to kids of any age.
If we don't read it to our Friday kids, I think I'll read it to mine. The messages are timeless and important. The messages of faith, healing, and that life is more precious in the face of danger and hardship never go out of style.
Probably my favorite thing about the book is the wise way in which Kino's parents let Jiya heal from his devastation. It seemed so natural and right. Some favorite quotes: "We must learn to live with danger," he [the father] now said to Kino. Ocean is there and volcano is there. It is true that on any day ocean may rise into storm and volcano may burst into flame. We must accept this fact, but without fear.
We must say, 'Someday I shall die, and does it matter whether it is by ocean or volcano, or whether I grow old and weak? Fear alone makes man weak. If you are afraid, your hands tremble and your feet falter, and your brain cannot tell hands and feet what to do. But his father shook his head.
