Where is the Rioja Region? What Does Rioja Taste Like? Approximately 40 percent of Rioja wines fall under this category and are very youthful and fruity with fresh acidity. Crianza: For a wine to be labeled a Crianza, it must spend a minimum of one year in oak. Following its removal from barrel, the wine must spend at least another few months in the bottle before being sold.

Reserva: These wines are made using the best grapes of a harvest, and are only produced during years that were considered to have enjoyed a good growing season. Rioja Reserva must age for a minimum of three years, with at least one of those in oak, and the rest in the bottle. Reserva wines generally show significant signs of aging, with subtle fresh fruit characteristics and more dominant notes of cigar box and dried fruit. Crianza wines: Wines that are, at the least, in their third year, and have spent a minimum of one year in casks.

Reserva wines: Selected wines of the best vintages with an excellent potential, which have been aged for a minimum of three years, with at least one year in casks and at least six months in bottle. Gran Reserva wines: Selected wines from exceptional vintages with a minimum ageing period of 60 months and with at least two years in oak casks and two years in the bottle.

It prospers here due to the perfect conditions from the altitude and shiting day- and night-time temperatures. Tempranillo produces red and white wines that can withstand long ageing periods, has a good balance of alcohol content, color and acidity, and has a smooth, fruity texture that turns velvety as it ages. The Garnacha grape is native to Spain and is the most extensively grown variety in the world.
